Carolynn King Richmond
CEO, MicroSociety, Inc.
Carolynn King Richmond has been President and CEO of MicroSociety Inc. (MSI) since 2001. Powered by her commitment to child-driven real-world learning, MSI has gained international recognition as a high-impact, innovative organization that transforms not only instructional delivery and student outcomes, but entire schools and surrounding communities. Richmond has propelled the MicroSociety model from an in-school learning environment to a synergistic community hub that links students, families, educators, and civic, business, and industry leaders together to drive change and prepare our young people to thrive and lead as adults. She has proven the model’s versatility through cutting-edge customizations that target STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), civic engagement, environmental stewardship, digital citizenship, and, now, advocacy and allyship. This year, she guided the development of MicroSociety 2.0, a digital tool for taking MicroSociety online, and MicroEconomy, a 3D online game that teaches critical thinking and problem solving. Under her leadership, MSI has expanded from supporting a handful of sites on the East Coast to several hundred in more than 40 states and five countries. In 2019, it received the Greater Philadelphia Innovation Award in education from Social Innovations Journal. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Masters in Education from Harvard University, and Juris Doctorate degree from Villanova University.
